DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
By Robert J. Watkins
Some people have what it takes to start a business; others don’t.
Successful entrepreneurs exhibit eight qualities that separate them from
most people:
They are Opportunity Seekers
Entrepreneurs live by the creed, “Within every problem lies a disguised
opportunity.” They are always looking for areas where people’s
needs aren’t being met well enough or not at all.
They are Committed to Being the Best
Entrepreneurs have contempt for the status quo. They are always looking for
new ways to get things done. They understand that a business can die by
the words, “But that’s the way we’ve always done it.” Entrepreneurs
recognize that in a changing market, what worked well yesterday could be
obsolete today.
They are Future Oriented
Entrepreneurs have a vision of what is possible. They are also willing to
invest their money and time in transforming their ideas into business ventures.
In business, entrepreneurs have the philosophy of “I will predict
the future by inventing it.” Entrepreneurs are visionaries.
They are Market-Driven and Customer-Focused
Entrepreneurs know that you are successful only to the extent that you are
able to create and maintain customers for a profit. Entrepreneurs understand
that customers will not come to your place of business and simply ask “What
can I buy from you today?” They understand the philosophy of “What
can I do for you?”
They Value Their Employees
Entrepreneurs recognize that their business will only be as good as their
employees. They understand that dedicated, loyal and committed employees
are the greatest assets their business has. Successful entrepreneurs focus
on employee training and getting the best tools in the hands of their employees.
They are Realistic
Entrepreneurs know that the business community is not perfect and the people
in the business realm may not always play by the rules. Competitors, suppliers,
vendors, consultants and the like may be dishonest in their promotional
claims. Entrepreneurs look before they leap. They move forward with knowledge
and wisdom before making decisions.
They are Resilient
Few entrepreneurs are overnight successes. Successful entrepreneurs understand
that business is not a sprint to the finish line, but a marathon ran over
mountains, valleys, peaks and the like. As someone noted, “It may
take two years to know if your business is a lemon and seven years to know
if it’s a pearl.” Success is more than having a great idea;
it takes patience and persistence.
They are Focused
Entrepreneurs guard their time with diligence. The main reason why people
fail is because they lose focus; they allow distractions to get them off
track. Distractions are nothing more than mental disruptions.
